STATEMENT OF JOB 

The Family Engagement Transition Coordinator is responsible for ensuring the implementation of the Scope of Services of the Family Engagement Project including all sections related to supporting families with transitions.

Job Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND JOB DUTIES

General

Specific Job Duties 

  • Collaborate with the Director of the Family Engagement Project and other employees of The Arc Tennessee to develop, implement, and oversee continuous improvement of a strategic work plan and other activities
  • Collaborate with Family Engagement in Special Education team to develop resources and training materials as needed
  • Ensure contract deliverables are being met per timelines set forth by the State in the Family Engagement contract, especially section A.8 which includes:
  • Annually update, expand, and maintain a database of secondary transition resources to increase public knowledge about secondary transition, self-determination, and self-advocacy;
  • Annually update the Tennessee Secondary Transition Handbook to align to the Transition Framework, Getting a Head Start with VR, Alternatives to Conservatorship and Conservatorship Handbook, and other resources to assist SWDs, their families, and educators in making decisions about secondary transition planning;
  • Provide training on secondary transition topics (e.g. student-led IEPs, secondary transition planning, self-advocacy, and postsecondary options) for students, families, and educators, including virtual conferences and workshops;
  • Provide educator training on secondary transition topics (e.g., student-led IEPs, secondary transition planning, self-advocacy, postsecondary options) to each State-identified LEA based on LEA needs as identified through the Annual Performance Report (APR), monitoring, and/or administrative complaint findings. Collaborate with other organizations and agencies (including Disability Rights TN and the Division of Rehabilitation Services) to develop an employment options resource portfolio for SWDs, their families, educators; and
  • Share person-centered planning resources and services online and through school fairs.
  • Provide education on conservatorship and alternatives to conservatorship to SWDs, their families, and educators by presenting six (6) workshops statewide (two in each grand division of the state) and posting related materials on the TN-TAN website.
  • Support The Arc Tennessee Family Engagement Team with annual conference planning
  • Provide updates on transition topics to the Communications Specialists for sharing on social media and/or in newsletters
  • Collaborate with regional Family Engagement Specialists and others to identify and address local family engagement needs of families who have a child with a disability related to transition
  • Plan and provide training on transitions for families and local education agency staff on topics identified by the Tennessee Department of Education, in collaboration as listed above and as approved by the Family Engagement Director
  • Provide support to the Regional Family Engagement Specialists as needed putting on in-person LEA and/or regional trainings for educators to engage and empower families in special education
  • Collect, compile, and analyze survey data for each training presented and provide results to the Family Engagement Communications Specialist within seven days of the training event
  • Distribute approved special education and disability-related resources and materials
  • Support families in getting needed resources including making referrals, and sharing resources and information 
  • Distribute the Family Engagement Family Survey and promote family participation
  • Participate in meetings as required, including quarterly professional development meetings
  • Support other activities of The Arc Tennessee such as family meetings, board committees, conferences, resource fairs, community networking opportunities, etc. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Reporting 

  • Complete weekly work plan report
  • Complete all reports as required  
  • Post-event surveys are to be reported within seven days after the event concludes
  • Annual evaluation with Family Engagement Program Director

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Preference is given to applicants who have a degree in education or experience working with children with disabilities in an educational setting and/or a personal connection with the disability community
  • Passion for helping students with disabilities and families succeed
  • Comfortable speaking in front of small and large groups including providing professional development to educators
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • Ability to work independently on a variety of projects 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Team player with flexibility and initiative
  • Computer literate using Microsoft Office Suite Software 
  • Reliable transportation
