Job Summary

This position performs all duties as CEO in organizational leadership; fundraising, personnel and fiscal management, and visionary institutional planning; represents the Foundation to donors, higher education institutions, churches, partnering organizations, government officials, and the public. The candidate will ideally assume leadership at the UMHEF office located in Nashville, TN on July 1, 2024. 

The United Methodist Higher Education Foundation, founded in 1965, is an independent nonprofit foundation that supports institutions of higher education affiliated with The United Methodist Church. The Foundation awards more than $2 million in scholarships each year to students attending more than 100 UM-related colleges, universities, and theological schools. The Foundation is supported solely by donors and its endowment; it receives no apportionment funding.

Job Responsibilities

  • Plans organizes, and implements national fundraising/development programs, including planned and deferred giving and major gifts; strategic planning. 
  • Oversees the Foundation’s assets/portfolio; consults with investment firms; coordinates with the Investment Committee.
  • Administers the annual budget of $3.5 million to ensure that all expenditures are consistent with Board policies and priorities.
  • Identifies and recruits members of the Board of Trustees; implements Board policies and training.
  • Manages office staff and consultants (including attorneys, accountants, etc.).
  • Translates and communicates the Foundation’s vision and mission on a global basis; interacts with the United Methodist (UM) Council of Bishops, presidents of UM-related educational institutions, UM foundation leaders, and UM General Agencies.

Qualifications

  • High level of planning and organizational skills; strong fundraising/development skills; superior oral and written communication skills; strong decision-making skills; commitment to leadership, not just management; adaptable to diverse environments; comfortable with extensive travel.
  • Education: Master’s degree; Doctorate degree preferred.
  • Knowledge of United Methodist higher education; knowledge of United Methodist polity and theology.
  • 5-7 years fundraising experience; 3-4 years management/supervisory experience; United Methodist higher education experience.
