Job Summary

The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee Human Resource Manager (HRM) will plan and develop the Human Resource strategies that align with the organization’s mission and goals. Reporting to the CEO, the position serves as a strategic partner with Senior Management providing insights and recommendations on HR matters.  The HRM leads and manages the routine HR functions for the organization including hiring staff, administering pay, benefits, and leave, and enforcing company policies and practices. The position oversees all Human Resources processes and identifies and implements opportunities for improvement.

Job Responsibilities

GENERAL EXPECTATIONS:

  • Plan, led, developed, coordinated, and implemented policies, processes, training, initiatives, and surveys to support the organization’s human resource compliance and strategy needs.
  • Oversee the administration of human resources programs including, but not limited to: performance and talent management; disciplinary matters; disputes and investigations; productivity, occupational health and safety; training and development; recognition and support of positive work environment.
  • Establish and lead hiring best practices to recruit and hire a high-performing, talented, diverse workforce.
  • Plan and ensure a smooth onboarding experience for new hires, including orientation and enrollment procedures.
  • Foster a positive and collaborative work environment.
  • Support change management processes and organizational restructuring as needed.
  • Conduct research and analysis of organizational trends including review of reports and metrics from the organization’s human resource information system and/or talent management resources.
  • Analyze trends in compensation and benefits, research and propose competitive-based pay programs to ensure the organization attracts and retains top talent.

ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Monitor and ensure the organization’s compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommend best practices; review and modify policies and practices to maintain compliance.
  • Establish the company wage and salary structure, and pay policies and oversee the incentive pay systems within the company.
  • Administer benefits, payroll, and timekeeping systems.
  • Conduct or acquire background checks and employee eligibility verifications.
  • Oversee the review and update of job descriptions to ensure accuracy and legal compliance.
  • Collaborate with legal counsel and program managers relevant to HR needs and policy.
  • Oversee various HR software package(s) and manage vendor relationships.
  • Maintain and update the employee handbook based on current employee policy trends.
  • Oversee and manage the company’s Human Resources budget.
  • Work in collaboration with the Safety Manager on emergency employee health and safety issues.
  • Maintain knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employee law.

TRAINING/DEVELOPMENT:

  • Coordinate the implementation of the organization’s personnel training and development programs.
  • Assist and guide managers and supervisors with performance management and personnel development, supporting the implementation of performance improvement plans when necessary.
  • Collaborate with the Safety Manager in reviewing, tracking, and documenting compliance with mandatory and non-mandatory training, continuing education, and work assessments. May include safety training, anti-harassment training, professional licensure and aptitude exams, and certifications.

COMMUNICATION/CULTURE:

  • Partner with leadership to communicate employee-related policies, procedures, programs, and laws.
  • Establish and maintain positive, cooperative, and effective working relations with employees. Make recommendations on practices to establish and sustain positive employer-employee relationships and promote employee morale and motivation.
  • Provide education and reference materials as required to managers and employees, including open enrollment information, performance review initiatives, summaries of perks and benefits, standardized reports, workshops, and manuals.
  • Attend and participate in executive, management, and company staff meetings and other activities as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field required.
  • A minimum of three years of human resource management experience is preferred.
  • SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP is highly desired. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times. 
  • Must be able to access and navigate each department at the organization’s facilities.

Benefits

As an organization, The Sanctuary has a complete benefit package that provides employees with premium benefit plans allowing members access to the best healthcare benefits for themselves and their families.  The Elephant Sanctuary pays 100% of the premium for individual medical, dental, and vision and offers coverage for dependents through pre-tax payroll deductions.  The Sanctuary also provides 100% employer-paid term life w/AD&D, short-term disability insurance, AirEvac, and the Employee Assistance Program.  The benefit package is roughly $11,000 of an employee’s total compensation.

Employees are eligible to participate in 401K retirement plans provided, traditional or Roth, through Slavic401K.  Contributions can begin on the first day of the quarter after 3 months of service.  The Sanctuary will match up to 3% and employees are fully vested after 3 years.

To keep a uniform professional look, The Sanctuary provides a small clothing allowance in the form of vouchers to use at the online Land’s End store.  The amounts are different for each department.

The Sanctuary does observe the following holidays:

  • New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and the following
  • Friday, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day
  • Employees are eligible for Paid Time Off. 
  • Year 1 to 5 10 days annually
  • Year 5 to 10 15 days annually
  • Year 11+ 20 days annually
  • Full-time employees are also eligible for 4 Days of Personal Health, prorated based on the hire date.

The Sanctuary also recognizes the need for employees to stay current in their field of work.  Professional development is encouraged and after the first year of employment, an employee can apply to The Sanctuary tuition program.
