Pay Rate: $19.00/hour

POSITION OVERVIEW 

Exhibit Technicians bring Adventure Science Center’s amazing exhibits to life. No other job lets you peek behind the curtain to see how an animatronic dinosaur moves, maintain a machine that literally creates tornados or keep visitors riding safe in a dynamic flight simulator.  

Every day—every hour—is different. One moment you might be designing and 3D-printing an element to improve an exhibit. In the next, you might be restringing an upright bass or touching up a dinosaur. Every day you’ll be learning something new and putting your expertise to the test.  

Some things you’ll need to be able to do:  

  • Be comfortable working with mechanical, electric, or electronic systems.  
  • Be familiar with common shop tools, such as soldering irons, multimeters, table saws, drill presses, and more.  
  • Enjoy tinkering, problem-solving, and learning.  
  • Work well in fast-paced, highly variable environments.  
  • Take initiative while working independently or as part of a team.  
  • Work on days between Thursday and Monday, including some evenings.  

The Exhibits Technician is a member of an essential team of exhibit technicians and builders whose primary purpose is to maintain and repair the center’s interactive exhibits. The Technician is responsible for various tasks and duties that help the Adventure Science Center function seven days a week.

The typical schedule for the Exhibits Technician is Thursday – Monday, 7:30 am – 4:00 pm

Job Responsibilities

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Inspect exhibits daily. Communicate with the exhibits team to promptly identify any damage, malfunction, or wear in exhibits.  
  • Perform regular preventative maintenance on interactive exhibit components, many of which contain mechanical, electrical, electronic, or computer-controlled devices.  
  • Identify and diagnose chronic or systemic defects in individual exhibits which reduce their efficiency and reliability, or compromise their intended function. Make adjustments, modifications, refurbishments, and upgrades to improve function and reliability while preserving the visitor experience, educational content, and design impact of the exhibit.  
  • Work with Senior Exhibits Coordinators and Exhibits Manager to ensure exhibit manuals, documentation, and maintenance/repair tracking logs are properly maintained, accessible, and in current form.  
  • Other duties as assigned  

Customer Service  

  • Assist in meeting needs and solving guest issues with a positive, courteous, and professional attitude  

Operational Support  

  • Attend quarterly staff meetings and department team meetings as required  
  • Assist with core operational functions of guest safety and wayfinding  
  • Assist during emergency and evacuation situations

Qualifications

SPECIFIC JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Demonstrated skill in troubleshooting and repairing mechanical, electrical, and electronic systems including computers, monitors, projectors, speakers, and media playback devices.  
  • Proactive initiative for identifying solutions to problems  
  • Demonstrated proficiency in a wide range of fabrication materials and processes involving wood, metal, and plastics, and experience with a variety of finishing techniques. Proficient in the use of hand and power tools  
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.  
  • Knowledge and practice of workplace safety  
  • Capable of coordinating efforts and collaborating with a variety of individuals.  
  • A willingness to learn a wide variety of new skills  
  • Clear communication skills  
  • Ability to work both independently and under supervision, follow deadlines, and follow up on assignments  
  • Conscientious and detail-oriented; must have an appreciation of the necessity of craftsmanship and quality, and the ability to follow through with paperwork, record-keeping, and documentation.  
  • Enthusiasm for science, technology, creativity, and education.  
  • Willingness to learn a wide variety of new skills  
  • Education requirement of high school diploma or equivalent  
  • Experience working with electrical and/or mechanical devices; basic understanding of machines, computers  
  • Post-high school course work, technical degree, associate’s degree, business or vocational certificate preferred  

SPECIAL CONDITIONS  

  • Must be at least 18 years old  
  • Availability to work peak days and hours, a combination of weekdays, weekends, and holidays.  
  • First Aid/CPR/AED (Adult and/or Pediatric) certification preferred  
  • The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts requiring normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms, use of safe work practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, and observance of fire regulations.  
  • Typically, walking, standing, bending,g and carrying light items (up to 20 pounds unassisted), and 50lbs assisted are required. At times, the employee may sit comfortably to do the work. Also, the employee must have manual dexterity and visual and auditory acuity.  
  • Some repetitive motion is involved.
