The Southeast Center for Cooperative Development (SEC4CD) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that supports employees’ shared ownership and control through the creation of cooperative enterprises in Nashville, TN, and throughout the Southeast. Our mission is to increase economic opportunities and benefits by creating and strengthening cooperative businesses and networks that grow an equitable economy. We give priority to developing the power and capacity of low-income, minority, and/or underserved areas of  Metro Nashville and beyond. 

Position Summary

The Communications Manager is responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive communications strategy to enhance SC4CD’s visibility, reputation, and impact. This role will involve managing all aspects of external and internal communications, including media relations, social media, content creation, and stakeholder engagement. Additionally, this position supports channels of communication for participants engaging in our programming. The Communications Director will report to the Co-Executive Directors.

Position: Part-Time

Salary range: $30/hour

Hours: 25 hours/week, some weekends and evenings 

Work Location: Nashville, TN or Remote

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a strategic communications plan aligned with the organization’s mission and goals.
  • Manage and maintain the organization’s social media platforms, creating engaging content and increasing follower engagement.
  • Develop and distribute press releases, media advisories, and other media materials.
  • Collaborate with staff and clients to develop compelling stories and case studies highlighting the organization’s impact. Some examples include supporting video production and co-writing pieces to share. 
  • Utilize the crafting of compelling stories to directly support fundraising efforts. 
  • Track and measure the effectiveness of communications efforts and provide recommendations for improvement with the goal of continuing to grow our community of subscribers. 
  • Build and maintain relationships with media outlets to secure positive coverage.
  • Create and manage email marketing campaigns to inform and engage stakeholders. This includes writing bi-weekly newsletters distributed to over 500 subscribers.
  • Update and maintain the organization’s website. 
  • Assist in applying for funding opportunities, including grant writing and proposal development.
  • Support organizational development by attending and contributing to weekly meetings, in-person staff gatherings, and events. 
  • Support programming offerings, particularly with communications roles, which may look like managing channels with participants of Co-op Academy, consultants, interpreters, etc. 

Qualifications

  • Experience in communications, public relations, digital storytelling, or brand development and/or bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field.
  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Strong graphic design skills. 
  • Experience with social media platforms and analytics.
  • Proficiency in content management systems and email marketing platforms.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in grant writing and proposal development.
  • Knowledge of cooperative development principles and orientation towards the solidarity economy. 
  • Experience with video production and editing.
  • Bilingual abilities are a plus.
