Job Summary

Consistent with the Christian mission and vision of the YMCA of Middle TN and in cooperation with other YMCA staff, under the supervision of the Achievers Specialist, the Achievers Advisor will work closely with high school program participants to assist them with planning for post-secondary options (college, workforce, other). Service delivery will include one-on-one meetings with students on a ‘roadmap’, collaboration with other high school youth outreach staff at club and group meetings, and workshops hosted by the coach in the community. Nurturing greater connection between the YMCA and leaders from universities, colleges, businesses, skilled trade pathways, and the military is a key purpose of the role.

Job Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Models the YMCA core values: Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility
  • Serves as an advocate/ambassador for the cause of the YMCA: Strengthening our Community through Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility
  • Uses survey feedback to determine college/career pathway goals of high school students enrolled in Achievers programs and shapes individual coaching, and programming accordingly
  • Assists students with college pathway services such as college applications, financial aid, and scholarship paperwork, selection of classes/programs, balancing study-work-family, and self-advocacy
  • Assists students with career and other workforce pathways such as military, internships, trade schools, or a combination of work and school with services like skills assessment, resume development, job applications, internship applications, interview skills, and preparing for a workplace setting (soft skills)
  • Assist students one-to-one in developing individual ‘roadmaps’ for their post-secondary pathway
  • Collaborate with other Achievers staff to integrate navigation into club meetings and other workshops
  • Develop key relationships with scholarship providers, career specialists, internship placement sites, employer groups, and other community resource providers that can assist students with entering college and/or the workforce
  • Maintain detailed and accurate participant records and program outcomes in database, tracking tools
  • Prepare regular reports for leadership and program partners
  • Assist with workshops, college tours, and special events that help students understand the college/career pathways available to them
  • Engage and participate in program fundraising efforts and other activities as needed
  • Assist in controlling and maintaining supplies and inventory on-site
  • Carry out special projects and events as assigned by program leadership

Qualifications

  • Passion, enthusiasm, and commitment to the mission and cause of the YMCA
  • An enthusiastic personality with the desire to serve members, volunteers, guests, participants, and staff to create a culture of service within our programs
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community
  • Must present a professional image possess conflict resolution skills, and demonstrate sound judgment and initiative
  • Must be highly organized with the ability to work under pressure and handle multiple tasks
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality of information
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other software programs, as well as the ability to use most office equipment, is required 
  • Excellent written, oral, and presentation skills 
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings
  • Experience in case management preferred
  • Experience working with New Americans, DACA students, immigrant and minority youth preferred
  • Skilled in problem-solving and able to take initiative
  • Minimum 21 years of age
  • Bilingual preferred (Spanish)
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field with 1 year of experience in college or career readiness programming, Bachelor’s degree in an unrelated field with 2 years of experience in college or career readiness programming, or high school diploma with 4 years of experience in college or career readiness programming required.
  • Experience working with school-aged students
  • Valid Driver’s License

Certifications Required:

  • Before the start of 1st shift: New Hire Orientation training
  • Within 30 days of hire: CPR/ First Aid/ AED
  • Must maintain annual training requirements
  • Within six months of hire: Complete course training and Certify in Adult Mental Health First Aid USA from the National Council for Mental Wellbeing

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to stand; walk on uneven surfaces; sit; handle or feel objects; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must be able to lift up to 40 pounds. The employee may be exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level is usually minimal to moderate.
